As soon as we got off the plane it was the smell. I am still not all sure what it is but it was familiar. I think the smell of polutions, burning trash and cow dung. It was strangly comforting. Well we have been here for almost a week and man it is cold! No heat in any buildings so when it gets down to 30 at night it is cold! The houses are made of concrete so you can imagine putting your feet on that floor. But we have warm sleeping bags and Samuel of course has crafted this amazing caccon of all our blankets. Most days I wear two pairs of socks, two pairs of pants, 4 shirts, a scarf, and possible a hat and gloves in the evening.
So a walk around our village you will see woman dressed in beauitful saris mixing dry cow dung with water to past them into a paste they can mold and then they dry them for cooking fuel. Which by the way is totally toxic to them. So bazarre, I say that a lot.
There is so much brokenness here it really is hard to explain. One thing that pains me is that just one street over there is a temple to the god of wealth. It is a beautiful building with beautiful landscaping and next door is a family living in makeshift "tents." They probably give every bit they have to the temple hoping for wealth and it will never come. Sometimes I feel like screaming.
Wednesday we will fly to Shillong another city where I have heard might be colder, oh boy! Well I better get back to washing my underwear in a bucket, I am super domestic.
I will try to write more next time but my fingers are freezing!
